Neural Learning and Intelligent Systems

At the Institute for Neuroinformatics (INI), a joint initiative of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, we explore the interface between neuroscience and artificial intelligence. Our interdisciplinary research combines biology, physics, computer science, and engineering to understand how the brain processes information — and to develop intelligent systems inspired by these principles. We are committed to excellence in research, education, and innovation, fostering a collaborative environment for students and scientists from around the world.

The long-term vision of the lab

  • Understand the principles of learning in the mammalian brain that give rise to biological intelligence.
  • Expand the ideas from neuroscience (e.g., bio-plausible network learning) into the field of machine learning to help AI researchers in building the next generation of intelligent systems akin to how mammalian brains work.
